AMCU responds to twin fatalities at Northam’s Zondereinde

AMCU responds to twin fatalities at Northam’s Zondereinde


Commerce union the Affiliation of Mineworkers and Development Union (AMCU) has expressed concern in regards to the alleged deaths of two workers at Northam Zondereinde mine in Northam, in Limpopo.

In response to preliminary data, AMCU notes that, on June 13, a improvement crew was conducting an early entry examination at 1 Shaft when a pressure burst occurred on the improvement face. The union says the rock drill operator tried to take evasive motion however was struck by the rock.

AMCU says crew members instantly assisted the injured employee, moved him to a protected space, and administered first help. The management room was knowledgeable, and paramedics have been dispatched underground.

It notes that the occupational medical practitioner (OMP) and life assist crew attended to the injured worker and ready him for airlift switch to Milpark Hospital. He allegedly succumbed to his accidents whereas receiving remedy on the mine medical centre.

AMCU provides {that a} second deadly incident occurred on the similar mine later that day within the processing plant’s smelter converter aisle the place a contractor worker supposedly died after falling from a crane throughout upkeep work.

The commerce union notes that the management room was instantly notified and that paramedics have been dispatched to the smelter. It provides that the OMP and life assist crew attended to the injured contractor worker.

Sadly, regardless of emergency response efforts in each instances, AMCU says they succumbed to their accidents.
